I hate to say this but all this social media stuff can be depressing.

This past October I made a decision that I was finally going to get my arms around how to use all of this social media stuff EFFECTIVELY. In other words, I decided to buckle down and really use these social media platforms to generate tons and tons of customers.

Like many of you, I keep hearing over and over again how one has to: tweet a couple of times a day, write on their blog a couple of times per week, post interesting links daily to their Facebook page, participate regularly in discussion groups on LinkedIn, upload videos to You Tube, send out a monthly newsletter, and basically do everything to become this all encompassing expert, authority, talking head, and guru in your field.

I don’t know about you but I’m getting a little depressed at seeing the lack luster results of my attempts at being insightful, pithy, witty, humorous, and even a little bit informative. For example, after posting the most creative poll on “How flexible will you allow your debt collection standards be over the holidays?”, it’s depressing that nobody is answering it. And then after spending a lot of time fixing up my company Facebook page, it’s demoralizing that out of the thousands of people who I invited to “Like”, just a few responded. I mean, come on people, don’t you want to be completely plugged in to everything you ever wanted to know about debt collection? I will say that there is the occasional bright moment when more than 1 person besides myself likes my discussion topic on LinkedIn.

So where do I go from here? I guess I’m going to try and not take all this social media stuff so seriously, as micro-monitoring the results of every tweet, post, and submission is a little bit compulsive.

Wishing all of you a wonderful holiday and a happy, healthy, and social media stress free New Year.
